BEAUTY: Clothing--Christopher Kane

At London Collections: Men, Christopher Kane showed a '16-'17 Fall-Winter collection with a fascinating inspiration: the modern artist John Chameberlain (1927 – 2011) who was famous for his sculptures made from automobile scrap metal. Chamberlain made large-scale pieces from bumpers, hoods, doors, and crushed car bodies showing steel and the bright colors of the auto's finish.

The first few looks in the Christopher Kane lookbook are related to Chamberlain's work only in an indirect way: belts have seat belt buckle closures, silvered vests are crinkled like crushed steel, and a jagged pattern shows up on shirts and a pocket slash. But as the looks progress, we get a more explicit reference with images and an all-over print of destroyed cars. This is a nice example of how a designer can express an inspiration that initially has nothing to do with clothing.
